Basketball,
Basketball & More Basketball!
The basketball continues to bounce at
the Alario Event Center this Spring and Summer as we gear up for some of the
best basketball this state has ever seen in a span of four months. We have it
all, boys’ state tournaments, elite travel teams and national championships.
The Governor’s Council on Physical
Fitness sponsors the Governor’s Games Boys’ Basketball Tournament
beginning Thursday, April 15th and ending on Sunday, April 18th.
Boys’ teams ranging from ages 10-18 compete in their own age divisions and
everyone has a shot to be a champion.
The Boys’ State AAU Tournament
returns again this year with the 9-13 year-old boys May 7th through 9th.
The top teams from each age group receive an automatic bid to the National
Championships of their respective age group.
The NIKE Memorial Day Classic
switches venues this year from Bloomington, Indiana to the Big Easy. Using the
Alario Center and four local schools, select boys teams in three age groups (17
year
olds,
16 year olds, and 15 year olds) compete in pool play on Saturday and Sunday and
the top teams start an elimination bracket tournament on Sunday and ending on
Memorial Day. These teams range from Seattle, WA to Miami, FL and all want to
prove that they are the next prodigy in their age group. These are the college
basketball stars of tomorrow—don’t miss this event!
MAYB, or Mid American Youth
Basketball, returns for its 3rd year
at
the Alario Center for 4th of July weekend. This tournament includes
boys and girls ages 11-18 from all over the United States competing in a
championship tournament of their respective age group. Games begin Friday, July
2nd and end on Sunday, July 4th. Come out and show your
patriotism and root for your team!
The AAU Boys’ Division II National
Championships return for its
3rd year with the 15 and 16 year olds taking center stage this year.
This competition is a grueling test of endurance starting Sunday, July 11th
and ending on Saturday, July 17th. Teams from all over the
continental U.S. travel to New Orleans and hoop it up all week long in pool play
and then double elimination play, ending on Saturday.
Last, but not least, the Basketball
on the
Bayou--Girls
National Shootout returns for an encore performance from last year’s
event. Fifty or more of the top 100 female players from the class of 2004 will
play in the Shootout. This event is unique because the young ladies will
compete in front of women’s basketball coaches from around the county who come
to this event scouting future talent. The action begins Wednesday, July 28th
and finishes on Saturday, July 31st.
